Abstract

This case study showed that a non-directive play therapy in a clinical setting has helped a 4 year old facing who was difficult to greet people in a friendly way, speak politely, respect his teachers and friends, and take responsibility in doing his school work. The intervention has been done in 33 sessions. Throughout the therapy sessions, there’s a shift between quadrant I and III based on the Play Therapy Dimensional Model. The hardships of the child are measured using Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) before and after intervention. There was a shift in ‘hyperactivity’ and ‘prosocial behavior’ aspects while there is no change in the ‘conduct problem’ aspect. However, the end interview revealed that the are changes in the child’s behavior; recently he has become a friendly child that greet everyone he meets, started to make eye contact when speak to others, initiate communication, showed respect to everyone (depending on his mood), and he showed responsibility to do his school work and wanted to admit his fault. The research shows that play therapy can yield a positive change in child intervention.
